Chancellor abolishes standing charges on gas bills to make payments fairer
2026-10-28 · head of government
The Prime Minister's Office says the Chancellor will end gas standing charges for around 23 million homes, asking Ofgem to deliver removal in 2027 or as soon as possible after. The fixed costs would instead be recovered through the unit rate, which the government says could save 60% of account-holding households around an average of £45 a year.
